In this 19th-century supernatural winter epic, a drunken applejack salesman must go from nobody to hero and become North America’s greatest fur trapper by defeating hundreds of beavers. The film’s estimated budget was around $150,000. Director Mike Cheslik estimated the cost of the mascot costumes to be around $10,000, and the crew purchased all of the costumes online. After the Watson beaver «passes out,» his mustache falls off and lands in the snow when he gets back up. He wears it again in the next scene, though he walks away without picking it up. Quoted on the Film Junk Podcast: Episode 940: Immaculate (2024). Jean Kayak and His Acme Applejack – Screenplay and Production: Wayne Tews – Engineering and Co-Production: Karl Landwehr. This is a film I saw at the Nightmares Film Festival. It’s not a horror film, but I still wanted to write a review. I should preface this by saying that I would not normally watch this film. However, watching it around midnight with a crowd of people was an entertaining experience. Co-writer/star Ryland Brickson Cole Tews’ antics in the theater also add to the fun. I should also mention that this was the Ohio premiere. In this film we have Jean Kayak (Tews), who has an orchid and makes hard cider. He is a drunk who just wants to have fun. One day, beavers come and destroy one of his large barrels used to store his cider. This causes everything to fall apart and it is winter. Jean has no luck catching food and struggles to survive. Then Jean starts the fur trade. He watches a bearded man make a fortune. So much so that the man who runs the post, Doug Mancheski, wants him to marry his daughter, furrier Olivia Graves. Jean has an uphill battle ahead of him to become a trapper and that will put him head to head with beavers in the area. They’ve built a massive dam that keeps a lot more beavers inside. So I was a bit familiar with what to expect here, having seen a previous film by Tews called Lake Michigan Monster. This one went in a similar direction. There’s CGI and animation for the backgrounds. These techniques are also used in the character movements and just to bring the whole thing to life. This takes a lot of time and I’m impressed by it. What helps is that we don’t get a lot of dialogue. This is presented like a silent film at times, we even get title cards. It also reminds me of cartoons where our characters didn’t speak. This looks cheap but what’s behind it is a lot harder than it seems. Following that idea, they tell a narrative story without a lot of dialogue. The things we see are repetitive. I’ll admit that towards the end I was exhausted and wanted to go home. I don’t want to take that away though, because the closer we get to midnight, the harder it is to stay awake. I will say though: this movie is made for a cinematic experience or to invite people over for a drink and just enjoy the time with it. I can see people hating it. I’m telling you as someone who loves serious and dark movies, this movie is a palate cleanser and a lot of fun can be had if you just go for it. I haven’t even mentioned that all the animals are just people in costumes. That makes it even better with the antics we see. If you get a chance to see this in the settings I mentioned, definitely grab it. My rating: 6 out of 10.
